Dave Muir began karate in 1969 at the Burnbank, Hamilton branch of the Kobe Osaka
shukukai clubs of Tommy Morris. Once every two weeks Tommy Morris would visit the
club from the main Glasgow dojo and impress all with his teaching and karate ability. Dave
only took one grading in three years as grading was something that was not important
to him at the time. He was graded straight to green belt (6th kyu). He then left the club
to go to university in Aberdeen in 1971 at the age of 21 and immediately joined the
university karate club where he met the instructor John Allan (2nd Dan at that time) and
assistant instructor Keith Crighton (2 kyu), both of the Aberdeen Shotokan Karate Club.
The following year he was voted captain of the university club and held this position for
the following year. During this time the university club travelled the length and breadth
of the UK competing in tournaments. When he left university he had gained his shodan
from Sensei Kato and was awarded a blue from the university athletic association. While
at university he also trained with the ASKC. Dave has been with this club ever since and
has enjoyed travelling with the club and being successful in tournaments. He was
instructor of the AUKC for 10 years and has been an instructor of the ASKC since 1976.
During his karate career he has lived, trained and instructed in Japan, Korea, Norway,
Italy, Holland, France, Portugal and Abu Dhabi.
